Image editing in Photoshop and Page Layout Software (part 2)
- Image Editing & Saving images for the web in Photoshop.
There are wide range of image editing features in Photoshop. While working on image we may need different image related functions for editing. Some techniques for image editing are: image resizing, applying rotate and flip, setting brightness on the image, setting contrast etc.
- Resizing an Image: This option is used for changing the size of image by setting document size according your requirement. You can supply the the different values for width, height, resolution etc. Follow these steps to resize an image.
step 1: Select or open the image to resize.
step 2: Click on image menu then choose image size. Now image size dialog box will appear.
step 3: Specify pixel dimension for width, height, and resolution.
step 4: Finally click on OK button.
- Setting Brightness on an Image: This option is used for changing the brightness of the selected image manually or automatically. Follow these steps to set brightness on an image.
step 1: Select or open the image to change the brightness.
step 2: Click on image menu then choose the adjustments option.
step 3: Click on Brightness/ Contrast option. Now Brightness/ Contrast dialog box will appear.
step 4: Select brightness option.
step 5: Now move the slide towards the right side to increase the brightness of the image and the left side to decrease the brightness of the image.
- Rotate of Flip Image: This option is used for rotating or flipping the image either horizontally or vertically on the screen. Follow these steps to rotate or flip image.
step 1: Open a image which you want to rotate or flip.
step 2: Click on image menu then choose the option rotate canvas.
step 3: Click on flip canvas horizontal to rotate the image horizontally.
Or, Click on flip canvas vertical to rotate the image vertically.
step 4: Click on 900 CW, CCW or 1800.
- Setting Contrast of an Image: This option is used for changing the contrast of the selected image manually or automatically. Follow these steps to set contrast of an image.
step 1: Select or open the image to change the contrast.
step 2: Click on image menu then choose the adjustments option.
step 3: Click on Brightness/ Contrast option. Now Brightness/ Contrast dialog box will appear.
step 4: Select contrast option.
step 5: Now move the slide towards the right side to increase the contrast of the image and the left side to decrease the contrast of the image.
- Saving Images for the web:
Besides the Photoshop's native format, we can save the image for the web also. There are normally two types of images for the web with GIF (Graphic Interchange Format) and JPEG (Joint Photographic Expert Group). The GIF format image is made upto 256 colors or less, where as JPEG format can hold high quality colors upto 16 million. To save image for the web follow these steps.
step 1: Open an image to save on the web.
step 2: Click on file menu.
step 3: Choose the option Save for Web and Device from pull down menu. Then a Save for Web and Device dialogue box will appear.
step 4: Click on Save option.
step 5: Give file name for the image and again click on save option.
- Printing Image Document: The image created, edited and formatted can be printed from printer to produce hard copy output for future use. To print a Photoshop document follow these steps:
step 1: Open the document to print.
step 2: Click on file menu then select the option print. Now print dialog box appears.
step 3: Supply print range for printing.
step 4: Supply number of copies.
step 5: Select other options from the dialog box such as document properties and give the values.
step 6: Click on finishing tab.
step 7: Click on print on both sides if the document is to be printed on both the sides.
step 8: Finally click on OK button. Now the document will be printed on the paper.
- Page Layout Software
Page layout are also the types of graphics software that allows to arrange the text, images, and other objects on a page. It is a technique used to customize the appearance of magazines, newspapers, books, websites and other types of publications. Thus, page layout is used for designing, formatting, updating and printing different publications quickly, effectively in desired style. Different areas and fields of page layout are designing and printing books, flash boards, greeting/ visitingcards, calenders, brochures, etc.
Some of the page layout software are: Adobe PageMaker, Adobe inDesign, Freehand, CorelDraw, Quark express etc.
Adobe InDesign :
Adobe InDesign is one of the popular page layout software which is the successor to PageMaker and the original desktop publishing software developed by Adobe
company. It is avaiable as a standalone package or in some of the editions of the Adobe Creative Suite.
- Features of Adobe InDesign:
- It allows creating, formatting and printing image in required layout.
- It provides several common graphical package tools.
- It allows typing and editing the text on opened or closed paths.
- It allows flipping and rotating the images as user's need.
- It supports easy and effective use of different color and pallets.
- It supports document saving in its native format and PDF format.
Starting Adobe InDesign: To start this program follow these steps.
step 1: Click on start button then click on all programs.
step 2: Now select the option Adobe Design Premium.
step 3: Click on Adobe InDesign. Now the given window of InDesign program appears.
Using the toolbox:
Tool box contains various tools for specific purpose. In indesign the tools are categorised into four types.
- Selection tools
- Drawing and Type tools
- Modification and Navigation tools
- Transformation tools
-Inserting Text in InDesign Document: We can use text tool and the given steps for this purpose.
step 1: Open the Indesign document to insert text over it.
step 2: Select the Text tool and click inside the text frame. Now the cursor will appear.
step 3: Type your required text as you type in other software.
-Typing on path: This tool is used to type on the path of any image. It is very much useful to flow the text on the drawn line in different shapes.
step 1: Open the document and go to the any page to draw any path.
step 2: Use pencil Tool to draw any opened or closed path.
step 3: Click on small triangle shape in Type tool on the Tools panel.
step 4: Click on Type On a Path tool from the Flour menu.
step 5: Type required text on the path of drawing.
-Placing and Editing Pictures: We can place the selected pictures at the required location of indesign document which can be edited according to the required
style and layout.
step 1: Click on File menu then choose the option Place. Then, a Place dialog box appears.
step 2: Choose required picture location to place the picture and click on Open option.
step 3: Click on the document where you want to place the picture.
step 4: Click on select tool from the tool box.
step 5: Click and drag on photo and move it.
step 6: Click on any corner of the photo and change its size.
step 7: Click on any corner of the photo and rotate it as required.
step 8: Similarly apply other necessary options for photo editing.
-Wrapping Text: We can wrap the text in any of the selected object or picture for making new and attractive look.
step 1: Open the document or draw the object to apply wrapping style.
step 2: Click on Window menu.
step 3: Select the option Text Wrap. Now text wrap panel will be opened.
step 4: Select or highlight the object to apply Text Wrap.
step 5: Select Wrap Style from the option panel.
-Using Drawing Tools: The drawing tool is used to draw different shapes such as basic lines, rectangle, curve line, square, polygon, open path, closed path etc in indesign according to requirement.
step 1: Open the document to draw the required shape or style.
step 2: Click on necessary drawing tool/shape from the drawing and type tool group.
step 3: Drag the mouse pointer on the document window to draw required shape.
-Rotating the Object/ Picture: We can rotate the select object in clock wise and anti clock wise direction. There are different ways for rotating an object in indesign such as using rotate tool, control panel, transform panel etc.
step 1: Select the object to rotate.
step 2: Click on Rotate tool from the tool box.
step 3: Now move the object in required direction using the mouse pointer.
-Flipping Object or Picture: This option can be used to design mirror image of any object in indesign. An object can be flipped in both the way either horizontally or vertically.
step 1: Select the object or a picture to Flip.
step 2: Click on flip horizontal to flip the selected object horizontally. Or, Click on flip vertical to flip the selected object vertically.
-Cropping the object: Follow these steps to crop the image or pictures.
step 1: Select the object which is to be cropped.
step 2: Click on Selection tool from the tools panel.
step 3: Drag on the rectangle frame of the object to hide the unnecessary part of the object. Now the selected object will be cropped.
-Using the Control Palette: The control palette is used to change font size, font type and different paragraph alignment style directly without going in menu.
step 1: Open the document to use control palette.
step 2: Click on window menu.
step 3: Select the option Control Palette. Now Control Palette box appears on the screen.
step 4: Select the required style from the list.
-Saving document in PDF format: We can save indesign document in Portable Document Format (PDF) which prevents documents from being modified by unauthorized users. The special software Acrobat Reader is needed to read the document of PDF format. Follow these steps to save indesign document in PDF format.
step 1: Click on file menu then choose the option Adobe PDF Preset.
step 2: Click on press quality option. Now Export dialog box appears on the screen.
step 3: Choose the location to save file from Save In combo box.
step 4: Type required Filename on Filename box.
step 5: Click on Save button. Now Export Adobe dialog box appears.
step 6: Tick on Range radio button and type page range in the document.
step 7: Select the option View PDF after Exporting. Now the document will be opened in PDF format.
step 8: Select interactive Elements options.
step 9: Finally click on Export.
-Printing Document: We can produce hard copy output of Adobe indesign document by printing from the printer. To print Indesign document follow these steps:
step 1: Open the document to print.
step 2: Click on File menu then select the option Print. Now the print dialog box appears.
step 3: Select the option default from the combo box print preset.
step 4: Select the printer type from the printer combo box.
step 5: Select required pages/ range to print.
step 6: Finally click on Print option.
